The International Youth Leadership Foundation might be the new kid on the (nonprofit) block but it hasn’t stopped us from getting to work and making an impact.
We hit the ground running this winter, starting Phase 1 of our IYLF Prep programming initiative with a group of 18 students from the Collinwood area. From January 24th through April 4th our students met every other weekend at the Collinwood branch of the Cleveland Public Library to learn about career opportunities in the STEM disciplines, arts and humanities, and business and entrepreneurship. The information presented to them was made tangible and more accessible through complementary field trips which included a tasting of many French delicacies at Edwin’s Leadership and Restaurant Institute, a STEM field scavenger hunt at the Great Lakes Science Center, and a behind the scenes tour of Playhouse Square, as well as presentations from a Senior Product Application Engineer from the Eaton Corporation, the former company manager for the touring production of Riverdance, and a panel of local business owners and entrepreneurs. Each week the students’ willingness to learn and try new things served as an inspiration to those around them. Most program sessions had 95% attendance or more, and students continually expressed excitement about discovering new interests.
On April 18th the International Youth Leadership Foundation will be honoring the students and their tremendous progress as well as raising funds for our Phase 2 program “Summer Cultural Cleveland”. We are looking forward to taking the next steps in continuing to advance our programming structure, and providing unique, enriching experiences for all of our students.
